He was honored in a state funeral at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., on Thursday.

The event was attended by all living presidents and observed with a national day of mourning.

An unnamed source informed The New York Times that former First Lady Michelle Obama was unable to attend the funeral service due to a scheduling conflict.

After the service in D.C. and the flight to Georgia, Carter's body will be transported to his hometown by car.

In honor of Carter's funeral, President Biden declared Thursday a national day of mourning.

Carter, who was president from 1977 to 1981,

He will then be laid to rest beside his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away in November 2023.
